The Vision of VHUMC's
Youth Ministry

(6th - 12th grade)

To invite YOUth from all areas
to get involved in a loving, Christian family where you grow in wisdom, spirit, and faith which helps you face the challenges in your life, armed with Christ's love and our support.

Here at VHUMC, we have youth from Homewood, Hoover, Vestavia, Altamont, and Indian Springs, John Carroll, Shades Mountain Independent. We love the different experiences we all have, and have fun sharing how similar we all really are as God's children. We hope you will join us!

Sunday School Classes
Sunday mornings, we gather in The Lighthouse for doughnuts from 9:30-10:00 a.m. At 10:00 a.m., each grade goes to its own classroom for announcements, lesson, and fellowship.

UMYF (Youth Group)
Sunday evenings, we talk about real-life issues and what role Christ plays in our lives. 7th and 8th grade; 9th and 10th grade; and 11th and 12th grade meet together. This is from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Confirmation
6th graders spend the whole year preparing to be members of the Youth Group and members of the Church. They meet on the Youth Floor on Sunday evenings during UMYF. Special events and field trips are planned throughout the year.

New Life Singers
This is our Youth Choir for grades 6 - 12. The choir helps lead our various worship services each Sunday, and goes on tour every summer. Choir rehearsals are every Sunday from 5:30 - 6:15 p.m.

Prayer Breakfast
Wednesday mornings before school, we meet at 6:45 a.m. to eat together and hear an inspiring devotion. This is an important time for youth to re-energize their faith in the middle of their hectic week. We provide rides to all schools.

High Point
Wednesday evenings, we come together and "hang out" in the Fireside Room from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. and have a Youth-led devotion. This is your chance to get some "down time," unwind, and talk about how your week and your life are going.

Retreats
We find that getting away from the daily grind, it is sometimes easier to hear God's Word and experience His love. Some of our favorite trips include:
· snow skiing in Colorado
· white-water rafting in Tennessee
· Adventure and Ropes course in NC
· Youth Camp in Lake Junaluska, NC, with hundreds of other Methodist teens

Bible Studies
We also have small group Bible Studies that meet at the church. Here, Youth learn about the Bible and share about their lives in a small, relaxed setting. Close, long-lasting friendships are made in these Bible Studies.

Dynamic Missions
At the core of all we do is a deep passion to serve God. This involves traveling around the country, and doing things right here at home. Each year:
· we have at least three week-long worktrips
· we sponsor a Christmas Festival (with games and presents) for 600 children in Bessemer
· we sponsor a Back-to-School Festival (teaching study skills and giving school supplies) for 100 children in West End
· each grade does two special service projects
· we serve each other when we need a helping hand.
