Library The VHUMC church library has an extensive and up-to-date collection of over 5,000 volumes, all carefully selected and maintained to support the work of the church. The scope or coverage of the church library is not intended to be as extensive as a public library, but focuses on the primary objective of being an outstanding resource of religious materials. Who can use the church library?
The primary users of the library are the church ministers, staff, and teachers, however, church members are also encouraged to use the library.
Where is the library located?
The church library is located in the church office area. The easiest way to get to the library is to enter the double glass doors on the Highway 31 side of the church, just below the church office entrance. When entering the church, turn to the right, and go up the steps. The entrance to the library is the first door on the left, directly after steps.
What are the hours of operation for the library?
If the church is open, the library is open for use.
When is the library staffed?
Wednesdays, from approximately 10:00 am to mid-afternoon.
How can I use the library if there is no staff available?
The library works on the honor system.
How long can a book be checked out?
Three-week period, however, if a book is needed for longer than three weeks, the client can simply write the extended check-out period on the check-out card. If a book is not returned after it is three-weeks overdue, a reminder notice is sent to the individual.
How do I return a book?
Books are returned to the library simply by dropping the book in the return-book bin, which is located in the library.
Is there a fee if a book is returned late?
No, there is no late fee.
What if I can’t find the book that I need?
There are a number of options.
With the above two options, a volunteer will normally contact you on the next Wednesday, when the library is staffed.
In those rare cases where there is an immediate and urgent need for a particular book, you may call the Chairman of the Library Committee, Mary Jo Cragon at 985-7232.
How does the library get books?
The majority of the library’s books are carefully selected and purchased as new volumes. Some books are donated by church members.
Who selects the books for the library?
The final decision of books to be purchased is made by the Chairman of the Library Committee.
How many new books does the library purchase each year?
The library purchases between 400 and 500 new books every year.
Who pays for the books?
Books are purchased primarily from church funds. Individual contributions and memorials are sometimes received for use as a source of funds.
Does the library purchase magazines or other subscription items?
No, these items are not available in the church library.
How can I check out books that are displayed in the hall display window?
These hall display books are available for check-out the same as a book on the library bookshelves. The display window is always unlocked, so interested individuals can open the window and review any book that is on display.
What are the major types of books contained in the library?
Overall, the majority of the library books are grouped into categories by the age-level of the reader. These groupings are –
