| “Give
thanks to God at all times for everything."
Ephesians 5:20
That can’t
be a law!
It’s not, “I’ve got to give thanks for
everything?
You mean I've got to be thankful for evil,
disease, sin, separation?"
Rather, its
truth is discovered in
affirmations of faith, and invitations
to trust.
For example,
the affirmation of faith,
“We know that in all things God works for good
with those who love him.”
Romans 8:28
This affirmation
is an invitation
to live this day, this moment
as a God-is-working-for-good day/moment.
It doesn't mean
that everything that happens is good,
but in everything that happens God is working for good.
As another example,
the affirmation of faith,
“There is nothing in all creation that will ever be able
to separate us from the love of God.”
Romans 8:39
This
affirmation is an invitation
to trust that even if the worst happens,
"nothing can separate us from God's love,"
and God is still working for good.
