David Hurst's Journal entry for Monday, June 16...

Well, we started the day with a delicious breakfast, as are all of our meals at the hotel. Time was short because we were invited by Damian (the school director) to attend the opening worship service with the students at 8:00 a.m. They said the pledge of allegience, had prayer, and 2 students sang a duet with a guitar. We were asked to sing, and we sang "Surely the Presence." The children were delightful in their school uniforms. After the school worship, Kay and Bryan were off to the Santa Cruz airport to retrieve the last of our 3 suitcases, but were unsuccessful. These suitcases had underwear, socks, fingernail polish, hacky sacks, etc. The authorities were concerned that we were planning to sell these items, and needed a letter stating that they were donated by the church, and would be used for the children at the school.

At the worksite, we are helping with renovations at the Colegio Metodisto for children all the way through high school. The school was built in 1957, and needs renovations. We are tearing out walls and windows, and digging foundations for new walls. These rooms will be office space for Damian and others, an information center, and classrooms for the children. As for our teamwork, a gang of 5 gals were shown how to chip the paint off the brick walls, so they can be plastered for the new rooms. The rest of us were cleaning up bricks and mortar from several walls that had been knocked out.

At lunch, wonderful as always, we recieved VHUMC hardhats from the Horizons Sunday School Class. Their note reminded us that we are not only building a school, but building loving friendships with the people here in Montero. They also gave us "Bob the Builder" scripture cards, which read, "...if anyone serves, they should do it with strength that God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power forever. Amen." I Peter 4:11
In the afternoon, we continued our work. After consuming a delicious dinner, we had some share time for our team. We told stories about what we are learning through our time here, and where we are seeing God. All in all, it was a very productive as well as enjoyable day.
